WHAT IS A GRAVEL GRINDER?
Think of it as similar to a CX bike built for Endurance riding that is also perfect for all-conditions commuting over distance.
TYRES
Gravel bikes typically run a 32-35mm wide tyre (as opposed to your standard Road bike at 23-25mm). Depending on the intended purpose of the bike, these tyres can often feature a small tread for traction in the dirt. These larger tyres help protect the rim against damage, reduces punctures, improves comfort in the saddle and they’ll also leave you less fatigued after riding along bumpy surfaces all day.
GEARING
Gravel creates more rolling resistance so these bikes get a little more emphasis at the lower end of the range. Durability of moving parts is also key for Gravel bikes given the rough conditions they are made to ride in - our gearing choices reflect this consideration.
FRAME
Both Gravel and CX bikes have strong frames and forks that are built tough for harsh treatment. The bikes feature clearance for the bigger tyres and any mud, and plenty of front/rear rack mounts for bikepacking, touring and fully loaded commuting.
Although similar to Cyclocross bikes, Gravel-grinders feature more relaxed geometry with a slacker head tube angle, a lower centre of gravity and longer tube lengths for a more comfortable ride over longer distances. Cyclocross bikes are designed to accelerate fast and corner quickly at lower speeds, but this can feel a bit ‘twitchy’ on endurance rides along wide-open gravel roads or long regular commutes.
BRAKES
Most quality gravel bikes feature disc brakes as they perform better in all conditions. If you’ve ever ridden to work in the wet, you’ll understand how this reliable power and control translates to a safer commute.
